MATH 8
In this StudyForge-based curriculum, students will continue their study of mathematics. During the year, Math 8 students will explore, learn, and practice such concepts as percent, squares, operations with fractions, linear equations, geometry and nets, surface area and volume, probability, and financial literacy. Math 8 includes ten chapters with 2-6 lessons each. Each lesson includes teaching videos and practice questions. At the end of each chapter, students will complete a mastery assignment project and submit all chapter notes and work before taking an online test to assess their knowledge acquisition. All work and assessments are available and are submitted online. No text is required. Students will be asked to complete and present three projects over the course of the year.

SCIENCE 8
Science 8 is divided into four curriculum areas which the students will explore throughout the year. In biology, students will study the “building blocks of life”–cells. Our earth science unit delves into the Earth’s crust, geology, earthquakes, and how to prepare for earthquakes. Chemistry in Science 8 focuses on atoms, diving into atomic theory, kinetic molecular theory, and Bohr models. In the physics unit, students become amateur photographers as they explore light and sound. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. No text is required.

SOCIALS 8
In Socials 8, students will study the geography, history, government, economy, and culture of our own great nation from the time of the first interactions with the Native Americans to present day. Students will study these topics from a Christian perspective delving into the influence Christianity had on American history. The e-text American Republic (4th ed. BJUP) will be provided to each student enrolled in the course. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online.

ENGLISH 8
English 8 is a language arts class which focuses on a variety of skills such as reading, writing, listening, presenting, and grammar usage. In this course students will gain experience as a writer as they write a variety of creative and expository pieces. Students will also engage in various genres of literature as they study topics such as character analysis, perspective, research, and source integration. Active forum posting will facilitate interaction with the teacher and others in the class. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. Students will need to borrow or purchase two novels for study in this course as well as two more books of choice.

ART II Visual Arts
(Optional Add-on or Stand-Alone Course)
Separate from the 8th Grade Core, the ART II is a visual arts, middle grade elective course. In this course, we will explore a variety of artistic styles, purposes, techniques, and skills. Students will be introduced to the basic elements of art such as line, texture, color, shape, and value. They will also learn various techniques for producing art works of their own using mediums such as watercolor, textiles, collage, etc. This class will include Masterpiece Studies, where we explore and mimic the work of great artists, Technique Projects, where we work on developing a particular artistic skill, and Art just for Fun, with projects that are intended to maintain engagement and enthusiasm. Students will be responsible for obtaining all class materials, including various art supplies (Full list will be provided to each family before class starts.) This class may be taken as a stand-alone course or paired with our Middle School Core (at a tuition discount). Students in this course may opt to receive a grade or simply audit the course. All work, projects, and assessments for the course are submitted online. Art II is a bi-monthly, 15 week course. Course availability subject to enrollment.

MUSIC II Beginner Music and Ukulele Basics
(Optional Add-on or Stand Alone Course)
Music II is a continuation of the Middle Grades Music Course; however, no prerequisites are required for this class. In this class, students will learn to play the soprano or concert ukulele. Both strumming and melody picking will be covered during the class. Students will learn basic music theory such as identifying rhythms, reading notes on the treble staff, and strum patterns for ukulele. Music history will also be included with the study of composers and historical periods of music. Students will be required to practice their instrument each week. Students will be required to purchase a soprano or concert ukulele, purchased from a reputable music store (Mrs. Coffey will be happy to guide and/or assist you in your purchase), a ukulele tuner or tuner app, a metronome or metronome app, and a textbook (TBA). This class may be taken as a stand-alone course or paired with our Middle School Core (at a tuition discount). Students in this course may opt to receive a grade or simply audit the course. All work, projects, and assessments for the course are submitted online. Music I is a bi-monthly, 15 week course.
