Course Description:
Reading Circle is a course developed to include elementary aged children (grades 1-4) in the BAO family, facilitate fellowship and friendship, and develop a love of reading. This is a supplement for at grade level learning and is NOT a full Language Arts Curriculum.
Reading Circle will focus primarily on introducing a love of reading, but along the way we will be building our fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and many other skills through classic children’s stories. Live sessions will be filled with activities, read aloud, and sharing. Some of the exciting books we have shared in previous classes are There are Rocks in my Socks Said the Ox to the Fox, The Boxcar Children, Henry’s Freedom Box, The Giant Jam Sandwich, I Want my Hat, Miss Know it All, and The Chocolate Touch. In the course of the 30-week school year, we will read approximately 30-35 picture books and 4-6 chapter books together with crafts, art projects, lessons, and/or activities that go with each one. We also highlight a different student in each class to share a favorite book, bring a show and tell, or play a game for a prize. Our goal is to have fun, make friends, and enjoy books together.
Reading Circle is a weekly, 30-week course that follows the regular BAO calendar. Two leveled courses are available. Level 1 is intended for students reading at a grade 1-2 level, and Level 2 is suitable for students reading at a grade 3-4 level. Reading material and activities are age/grade appropriate at each level. Weekly crafts and activities may require basic supplies. A supply list will be communicated with families before the corresponding lesson. Students will need access to basic art supplies and a printer. There will be some completion-based assignments to finish outside of live class. No text is required, but the class may make some students “need” more books!
Course availability based on enrollment.
