Language Arts 9 – 12

ENGLISH 9:
English 9 is a language arts class which works to connect students to challenges and stories from around the world. Students will study novels, poetry, and a variety of other media. They will also learn and use literary devices while developing critical thinking skills. Students will choose a grade-level novel that addresses global issues and interests them for one of the novel studies. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. Students will need to borrow or purchase two or more novels for study in this course.

ENGLISH 10:
English 10 combines composition and literary skills to improve the overall language abilities of the learner. Students will do literary analysis on a variety of readings and novel studies from classics to historical novels. Students will contribute to class discussions and forum posts in “literary circle” fashion. Grammar, fluency, and fundamentals of language will improve as students write many varied compositions throughout the year. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. Students will need to borrow or purchase two or more novels for study in this course.

AMERICAN LITERATURE:
This American Literature course is a survey of various authors throughout six literary movements of American history: Colonial, Revolutionary, Romantic, Realistic, Naturalistic, and Modern. Students will study works of poetry, prose, and fiction. They will also create a wide range of original writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. Grammar, composition, and the writing instruction will continue to develop each student’s writing abilities. All work, projects, and assessments are available and will be submitted online. An e-text from Bob Jones University Press is required and will be provided to each student.

BRITISH LITERATURE:
This British Literature course is a survey of selections from eight literary movements: Old English, Middle English, Tudor, Stuart, Neoclassical, Romantic, Victorian, and Modern. Students will study works of prose, poetry, drama, and fiction. They will also create a wide range of original writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. Grammar, composition, and the writing process will continue to develop each student’s writing abilities. All work, projects and assessments are available and will be submitted online. An e-text from Bob Jones University Press is required and will be provided to each student.

WRITING ESSENTIALS:
Writing Essentials is designed to help students in grades 11 and 12 develop their writing skills. Students will go back to the foundations and build from there, learning how to make the most powerful effect on readers, compile ideas with a natural flow and transition throughout long writing, write for business, and more. This course will include weekly exercises in the text, writing, self and peer reviews, and tests. We hope to refine each student’s writing skills, so they are both efficient and proficient writers, whether they intend to go to university, enter the job market, or start their own business. All work, projects, and assessments are available and will be submitted online. A text/workbook will be required (TBA).
