Science 9 – 12

EARTH SCIENCE:
Earth Science is an expanding study that moves from the Earth’s lithosphere to the rest of the universe. Students will build their critical thinking skills as they study the major theories in earth science and follow those theories through to their conclusions. Throughout the course, they will be guided by biblical and scientific principles, ultimately coming to a better understanding of their Creator and a greater appreciation of His creation. The e-text Earth Science (5th ed., BJUP) will be provided to each student enrolled in the course. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online.
Teacher: Miss Leonard
PHYSICAL SCIENCE:
This science course meets the students where they are: in the cafeteria, on the sports field, on the roads, and in the music room. Through physical science, students will learn how everything they do relates to chemistry and physics. In the chemistry chapters they will see the wonder in how matter and energy interacts in the food we eat, the drinks we drink, and the matter that makes up our world. In physics chapters, they will see how things move, why things move, and why objects behave as they do. The e-text Physical Science (6th ed., BJUP) will be provided to each student enrolled in the course. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online.
*Course availability is based on enrollment

BIOLOGY:
This Biology course is intended to show each student God’s power and glory in creation while learning about cellular biology, genetics, taxonomy, microbiology, botany, zoology, and human anatomy. When studying modern day topics such as human cloning and stem cell research, students are pointed to Scripture as the ultimate authority and are encouraged to develop a biblical perspective about these topics. The e-text Biology (5th ed., BJUP) will be provided to each student enrolled in the course. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. Students are required to purchase dissection kits and lab manuals for use in the course. Teacher will provide sources for all materials needed.
*Course availability based on sufficient enrollment.

CHEMISTRY:
In this StudyForge-based course students will be studying the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds. It begins with a study of atomic theory in relation to quantum theory, the shape of molecules in 3D and periodic trends. The atomic and molecular structure of matter is analyzed through experimentation with emphasis on chemical reactions. Students will also be introduced to the concept of a mole and learn about stoichiometry. Solution chemistry (solubility, pH and titrations) and organic chemistry (naming compounds, functional groups and synthesis) are also covered. These topics are examined using a wide variety of techniques including laboratory activities, analysis, projects and investigations. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. There will be a supervised final exam at the conclusion of the course. (PREREQUISITE: Physical Science and Algebra I)
*Course availability is subject to sufficient enrollment.

PHYSICS:
This StudyForge-based curriculum allows students to delve into kinematics, dynamics, momentum, and energy, among other topics. The course consists of nine chapters. Each chapter contains three lessons of animated, instructional videos, practice activities, and a chapter test. All work, projects, and assessments are available and are submitted online. There will be a supervised final exam at the conclusion of the course. (PREREQUISITE: Physical Science, Algebra I, Chemistry preferred)
*Course availability is subject to sufficient enrollment.
